Modernizing Mission-Critical Radio Communications Across LAX & Van Nuys Airport

E.K. Associates partnered with Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and Burns Engineering to support the modernization of LAWA’s mission-critical 700 MHz Digital Trunked Radio System serving Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Van Nuys Airport (VNY).
E.K. Associates provided strategic leadership, technical subject-matter expertise, and end-to-end project management to ensure airport operations, safety personnel, and aviation partners maintained reliable, secure, and high-performance radio communications.
Through structured analysis, engineering support, procurement leadership, and disciplined project execution, E.K. Associates strengthened LAWA’s radio communications ecosystem—enhancing operational readiness and long-term system resilience across two of the nation’s busiest airports.

Provided program-level oversight and radio-systems expertise across multiple LAWA initiatives, including digital trunked radio upgrades, transmitter installations, software enhancements, fleet mapping, radio programming, and interference studies—ensuring alignment with long-term communications strategy.
Delivered comprehensive project management services encompassing project charter development, scope definition, work breakdown structures, scheduling, cost control, change management, stakeholder coordination, contractor oversight, and executive reporting.
Led development of RFIs, RFPs, and RFBs supporting acquisition of radio equipment, engineering services, and system components—ensuring transparent, compliant, and competitive procurement processes.
Provided deep radio-engineering expertise through system architecture review, configuration planning, fleet mapping, radio programming optimization, transmitter upgrades, interference and intermodulation analysis, and coordinated software deployments.
Tracked project performance metrics, enforced quality standards, and proactively managed technical and delivery risks to prevent schedule delays, cost overruns, and operational disruptions.
Coordinated closely with the LAWA PMO, airport operations teams, safety personnel, contractors, and partner engineering firms to maintain alignment, transparency, and informed decision-making.
